Dalew Farms Blurb) for CSA subscribers.
We are nearly organic, but not certified
organic. We use absolutely no chemicals or
artificial fertilizers, we don’t grow or
feed any GMO’s (genetically modified
organisms) and all of our animals are raised
on pasture during the spring summer and
fall. Why aren’t we certified organic? Our
farm has been free of chemicals and
fertilizers for more than the 3 required
years for transition to organic
certification, but sometimes we use non
organic seeds to get varieties that perform
well and are disease resistant, allowing us
to avoid using chemical fungicides. We use
plastic row covers to get vegetables ready
earlier in the season, but don't use the
biodegradable kind, because we don’t want to
leave any unnatural residues in the soil. We
will attempt to either re-use the non
biodegradable plastic, or recycle it. We
also feel that the “certified organic”
sector is becoming more industrialized and
is more about marketing for large
corporations, than it is about an
environmentally friendly local food system
and thus, we are opting out of the certified
organic empire building process!

Customer comments from 2007:
“We just love your blurbs, doesn’t matter if
you’re late, we read it when we get time,
anyway. We are enjoying our new life style,
although it was a lot of work preparing our
vegetables as they came in each week during
the summer, I’m certainly enjoying the
luxury of including these prepared packages
from the freezer in to my recipes. I feel
much better knowing what I am putting into
our bodies, and really do think it’s making
a difference in our health I haven’t been
having sinus head aces. My complexion has
improved, and I’m, losing weight. “
“This year was the first time my family came
for Boxing Day supper. (I’m spoilt my
daughter usually does it). Justin’s
ragout was a great hit, thanks to you.
We brought the hams to my brother in laws
Christmas Day, they raved about the ham not
being salty and how nicely smoked they were,
thanks to you. All the fast great
meals I made up, during this busy season,
were thanks to you both. If you ever
think your hard work is not appreciated,
slap yourselves. We love you, (we are
older we can say that) Merry Christmas and a
very special Happy New Year to our wonderful
farmers! Once again, thank you!

“I really enjoy your "blurb" guys. Quite a
hectic life you guys have ... very eventful.
It is wonderful to see that you always seem
to be so positive about it. Great way of
looking at life !! Awesome attitude !! Keep
up the good work ! :-)
“Oh! The carrots were wonderful... soooooooo
sweet! I forgot how different homegrown and
storebought carrots are!"
“Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know I had
the chance to roast one of your chickens and
it was awesome - great tasting - You forget
what a REAL chicken is suppose to taste
like! I made dinner for my family and
everyone couldn't believe how flavourful it
was ( I think I may have had something to do
with that too!!!)."
“My kids are eating better and we are very
pleased with the quality and quantity.
Thanks!"
“Dave, I think you have another skill which
should be saleable. You are a good writer,
ever thought of writing a column in the
local paper? I love reading your farm
updates. I think many others would too."
“Today I thought of another reason that I
like getting the veggies from you guys. I
don't have to decide which ones to buy, when
to buy, where to buy, how much to buy, etc.
You guys decide for me. I really like it!!
Of course, the taste and freshness are
wonderful too.
“I loved the taste/freshness of the veggies
and I want to support local agriculture. My
favorites were the Romaine lettuce which
tasted so much better than the store, the
carrots, the beets, the brussel sprouts,
etc."
More info on our production methods:
Pastured Pork - Pigs at Dalew Farms
enjoy being able to express their “pigness”
Our pigs are raised on pasture, foraging and
rooting on fresh pasture in addition to
their GMO free, drug free homemade diet.
Rooting through and aerating the compost
pile is one of the important jobs that pigs
do with their snout! Taste the Dalew Farms
difference compared to store-bought pork!
Grass-fed Lamb - Sheep and lambs are
raised on pasture and rotated daily during
the spring summer and fall seasons. We use
portable fencing and guard dogs to protect
the sheep from predators. The sheep feed on
pasture growth that was fertilized by the
chickens. Since our lambs are grass-fed
there is no worry about GMO’s, and we use
zero antibiotics or parasitides.
Salad Bar Beef - Our cattle are also
raised completely on pasture and hay. For a
summary of health benefits for people who
eat grass-fed meats see
www.eatwild.com. Our cattle are
not injected with hormones, and receive no
antibiotics or parasitides. The cattle are
moved often to a fresh salad bar of pasture
to encourage as much forage intake as
possible.
Pastured Chicken - Our chickens are
raised in portable, floorless field shelters
that protect them from predators and nasty
weather, but allow them to scratch in the
dirt, and eat large amounts of fresh clover,
grass, and bugs. The feed used to supplement
the pasture intake is our homemade mix
containing absolutely no GMO's. Our chickens
are drug free their entire life here at the
farm! The chickens primary importance on the
farm is to help fertilize the fields, and to
de-bug and sanitize the pasture for the next
pass by the sheep or cattle. We follow
Mother Nature’s path as closely as possible
at Dalew Farms.
