Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) is a
system of growing and distributing food in a
way that directly connects farmers and those
that consume their food. CSA Members pay for a “share” of a farm’s
seasonal produce before the growing season
begins. This gives the farmer the income he
needs earlier to invest in seeds, supplies,
and growing the plants to maturity. Members or “shareholders” then
receive a weekly quantity of fresh,
in-season produce. Some CSAs require volunteer hours in the
garden and some do not. Others offer a
reduced share price in exchange for garden
labour. This is a way of helping members
understand what goes into growing their food
and feel more connected with the whole
process.
